Bread and Butter / Du pain et du beurre

From March 2010

Mom and I drove to Drumlin Farm yesterday, just outside of Boston. We had our picnic by the brown Swiss cow and saw a kid that was just two days old! I kept telling Mom how he, his brother and the lambs were "so cute." We saw two big pigs which didn't get up despite my asking nicely before yelling at them and all kinds of different roosters and hens.

As always when we are in the woods I picked up a lot of sticks and listened for birds until it was time to go to class.

Yes I took a class. A bread making class. It was hard work! We started by grinding rye, wheat and oat grains into flour, it's a lot of work, but fun too. We smelled the yeast before adding some water to it and measured the flour and the salt. The secret ingredients were a little bit of butter and some maple syrup! We also added some milk and sugar to the yeast and worked all together to make the dough. And you know what happened after we put it down for a nap? The yeast and sugar got together and made it big, very big! Then we shaped our dough  - I made a bunny and the teacher put them all in the oven.

While that was going she had us shake some heavy cream in a jar. Somehow we ended up with buttermilk and... butter for our bread! That was the best snack!
